"Doubtless, despite his suffering, he had fallen asleep while walking, for now he sees another scene -- perhaps he has merely recovered from a delirium. He stands at the gate of his own home. All is as he left it, and all bright and beautiful in the morning sunshine. He must have traveled the entire night. As he pushes open the gate and passes up the wide white walk, he sees a flutter of female garments; his wife, looking fresh and cool and sweet, steps down from the veranda to meet him. At the bottom of the steps she stands waiting, with a smile of ineffable joy, an attitude of matchless grace and dignity. Ah, how beautiful she is! He springs forwards with extended arms. As he is about to clasp her he feels a stunning blow upon the back of the neck; a blinding white light blazes all about him with a sound like the shock of a cannon -- then all is darkness and silence!
Peyton Fahrquhar was dead; his body, with a broken neck, swung gently from side to side beneath the timbers of the Owl Creek bridge."
-Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge. Ambrose Bierce.
Dreams are akin to a neuro- surgeon operating on his own cerebral cortex. Which is the object and which is the subject? If, in the circumstance of a dream, there is neither in this quantum operating model of conciousness, I have to ask myself, with a healthy dose of skeptical distance from my own experience, could a predispositioned scenario be inserted into an unrecognised form of dream state, in order to conduct psychological probing, on a variety subjects, leading them to conclude that they were abducted?
There is a recognised variability in a dream state wherein the working definition includes dreams based on associative processes which on the surface appear to be nonsensical, random and are subject to an apparently chaotic entanglement of, for lack of a better description, much like our waking state without the division of attention being enmeshed in tasking, measurement, choice etc.
Another dream state is, again, for lack of a better term, is known as a "vivid dream." Having had over a decade of these rare but compelling experiences, the best description I can provide is that the experiential difference of vividness between the two is akin to being inserted in the one dimensional line drawings of a cartoon in the sunday paper, and navigating a point of observation within high definition television. A very key characteristic is the highly refined sense of experiential self that is highly organised beyond that of a dispassionate observer or a set of reactions. A sense of self referential measurement which creates choice, probability, and discernment is so attenuated as to manifest itself as an interactive state between a "simulated" external and external spacial relationship. Another discernible difference is the often transpersonal nature of the content, which are outside of ones own conceptual underpinnings. Perhaps these are what were once called visions. These may be due to an expansion of a state of possibility or potential that is proverbially cubed to the extent that the strength of this sleep state disassociates itself from it's base tasking nature and enters a predominately transceiving modality open to the equivalent or literal quantum state. This is one possibility among many.
Another form of dream state is known as sleep paralysis, is largely thought to be a semi hypnotic intermediate state which reconciles itself between waking and dreaming states, where the biological sensate inputs are creating false images, etc that are self referential which creates hallucinations, false targets by inference of entangled sensory data. Intruders, etc are sensed by false input and reconciled by the quanitive measurement of this semi dream state, to be material. Much has been made of this state as a possible cause of the alien abduction phenomenon, which seems reasonable within a set of limitations which confines this theory to providing a conceptual model as long as there are no corresponding external evidential events or material which tilts this model elsewhere, or completely contradicts this biochemical theory of origin.
I recently experienced the second of two sleep events which does not fall into any of the above listed working models and it has led me to share my experience with you, not to prove or disprove any theory, but to consider whether, as I have, whether this sheds any further light into the abduction phenomenon. Also, there is a personal reason as well, I would welcome and appreciate hearing from anyone who has had a similar experience.
Both of these experiences had the following three characteristics in common as to "content":
1. There was a paralysis, which resulted in the opportunity for being physically manipulated due to, in effect, being "stunned".."overwhelmed" by the strangeness of circumstance, which led, in turn, to a disassociated state. There was no hypnotic technique employed.
2. Experimentation which was both posed and presented as being either altruistic or exploitative. One was empathetic, the other was its opposite.
3. The communicated experimentation which led to terror either through the process itself or the anticipation of the process. ( one was the medical equivalent of an injection, and vague memories of being restrained, and the second was the same only this time for the purposes of harvesting of my organs)
There were six common characteristics upon waking;
1. I awoke in an immediate state of stress and panic.
2. There was difficulty in the recognition and acceptance that I was back in bed and "not still there"
3. There was a state where I had a very visceral sense of having literally occupying two locations at the same time.
4. A strong ambivalence between denial and acceptance of what had occurred leading to a milder form of disoriented stress..ie: what did this mean?
5. A fear of recurrence, a strong sense of having been abducted that transcended whether the event was a material event or internal, there was no discernible difference between the two, the effect was exactly the same.
6. In both events, afterward, it took roughly an hour or so to "digest" and place into perspective, what had occurred.
Leading up to both of these events, were three biochemical changes over roughly a two week period prior to each event.
1. Increasing difficulty, stiffness, inflexibility of muscles both during and after a sleeping state. No paralysis.
2. Decreased REM, deeper sleep states of shorter duration. Eight hours of sleep condensed to two.
3. An increased sense of physical fatigue during waking hours. Not tiredness but a lack of energy.
I sense that I was the subject of some simulated experiential psychological testing during exceptionally strange and deep dream states. It was experienced as far beyond a vivid dream. There was an increase in the stress producing scenarios in the psychological equivalent of turning up a treadmill by the increase in the nature of the stress provoking and producing scenarios. Perhaps it was both biochemically induced by random enviromental and\or internal causes and this was exploited by either an extremely unconscious and self destructive and masochistic self image to the extent I could "scare myself to death", or there was some unknown agency of interference, which in the face of lacking any evidentiary, material proof whatsoever..frankly seems in all sincerity seems counterintuitive and absurd. If I were less self skeptical, I could tell you otherwise. I have no idea of either the causation or meaning, if any, of what occurred. All I can do is share this experience. Did I attract these paranormal events by disposition or otherwise? I think not. Am I alone in this? I hope not. Am I fearful of sleep or life in general? No. Are some of us in the population experiencing a unrecognised and unclassified form of dreaming? More than likely. Is this form of dream being exploited? I don't know, but it makes one wonder.
All of this made me think back to long ago and recalling Phillip K Dick's theory of VALIS...or the open ended question concerning the death of a certain remote viewer in the employ of intelligence services some years ago, as I recall reading in one of Nick Redfern's books...more possibilities, than answers...

Initially, I was quite worried when I read your latest blog and asked myself the question is he in trouble or not? After some thought I'm of the opinion, not yet.
I'm in the process of reading Russell Targ's “Limitless Mind”, where he claims to have “found God” as a result of remote viewing. I would not personally have recommended this path, but we each have our own and who am I to question his? We seem to have our own personal epiphanies in the strangest and most unexpected ways.
I tend to see the problem as follows:
That you seem to have built a wall of words between yourself and your obvious spirituality; as below, so above.
You are happy for the spirituality to take place outside of the confines, but recoil from the idea of letting it in.
What this has done is to set up a barrier to the positive and free-will-respecting multitude of entities of the Creator and left a vacuum that is being invaded by those that have no respect for your wishes.
Your God-only outlook was fine in the past, but things have changed and He wants you to acknowledge the creation that He is so proud of.
There is no mediator between Him and you, but the rest of creation is and was intended to be, there to help. Fortunately for us, the positive side outnumbers the negative by several to one and as such are more easily and readily available - but only if invited. I would respectfully recommend that you 'choose' to fill the void with these influences and all will be well.
Dear Bruce,
Very interesting and frightening. No one can predict what this means unless it continues, which in abduction cases seems to be the norm. First, I want to stress something before I tell my experience. I was never abducted. I am as sure of that as I can be.
One night when I was ill, I went to bed where I live now. This was about two years ago. I went into a sleep and then I felt myself slip into almost a semi -state of consciousness. I could not move and suddenly these "grays" were at the bottom of my bed. They looked very typical large white heads, long arms - they were in the shadows. I panic because I could not move. One went to my feet and the other two moved up along the side of the bed toward my head. I couldn't turn my head but I could see them in my periphery vision. I think they were trying to do something to my head. By that time I was so frightened I broke out of the sleep paralysis and they disappeared. I had been reading about abductions and being sick my brain had created this scenario. I knew then and even during the abduction that if I were to wake up it would all go away. I also believe once you have an esposde of sleep paralysis and have another you know what is is. Which is my case, I had them before(although no aliens there)
I believe there are many higher states of consciousness and I think this is where true communication begins.
Burse I am getting so many stories of interaction between witnesses and UFOs. It seem now many people try to signal the object(s). Many, many times they do something in return. Also and I have read and heard about people sending thoughts out and having the objects respond to those thought. One person told me of an experienimented in which in a chance encounter the object flashed when he asked it in his mind to flash. I believe what he says without doubt. This person is not in the UFO community and to say the least very bright. . How in turned do they know you communicate I don't know.
It may have to do with focus what you are focused on them your thoughts become more apparent. Then going into a higher consciousness you connect with others. But there is one truth I have learn at least about "ET" contact. Reading about abduction in the beginning, and even now, I know they lie - plain an simple. They are not angles.
I don't know what it would be like to be in contact mentally with another intelligence or feel a mental boundary was being crossed and probed. But I know it must be strange. Bruce you seem to be objective about it. That is good. Please give us an update if anything else transpires. Is it getting close to Halloween ...good.

Bruce:
I agree almost completely with your assessment of what may be the induced psycho-dynamics of the sleep/abduction experience.
Of course "abductees" or "experiencers" will disagree, vehemently, since there is a palpable tangibility to their experience that cannot be adequately described; something akin to cosmic consciousness, where the person experiencing that cannot (or will not) elaborate.
This means that abduction episodes need serious scrutiny, which you seem destined to provide.

Hi Alan,
I think these events, which took some time to digest and process (as to whether or not, it was of any value to share them) has a common linkage, or mechcanism between the vast majority of ufo sightings, certain dream states, ghosts and even events such as Fatima..and this is a quantum form of manifestation interlinked with the same in perception. What makes this all fascinating to consider, are the predispositioning factors that must exist in terms of probability, to make an event happen in X location rather than Y or Z etc. What are the intermediary conditions? This would be a ripe area for experimentation. As far as myself, unfortunately, in terms of spirituality, I am as fallible as the next person, however, the more I look back on those events, for whatever inexplicable reason(s) I feel I was being warned off...as silly as that sounds..."to back off unless you want more of the same" sort of scenario...your guess is as good as mine. If there is something's corn I stepped on to make me the object of attention in this, it only makes me more curious as to why the defensive posture? All of this is pure speculation and Alan, I assure you my feet are still attached to the ground. Thanks for your kind words.
Joesph,
I agree in your views that there is some sort of interactive quantum mechcanism that is operative. I think that alot of what we experience in this area is almost an interactive projection upon conscioussness, as Vallee called it "meta-logic" that if taken literally, is absolutely non sensical, however the language appears to be visual in focus, whether it is a crop circle, a flying disk, an airship, a dream of abduction, with various attenuations, like non sensical communications, non sensical this or that. I sense it is a language problem as it has been noted recently in studies, that our set of symbols, words create conceptual reality more so than the other way around, perhaps this sets a limit to communications..in another words, this phenomenon is saying..I am like this...or I resemble that..but that is any direct consistant image were applied as in an example all contactees said the aliens were from "ohio" and they all resembled a certain prototype...but that isnt the case...
Its almost it is saying:
1. This is an experiment.
2. The image or experience is not the point of the exercise. Dont look for meaning in content, the message is that it is there.
3. How do you interact? Do you learn to interact?
Or, do we chase what has been projected, as if chasing dreams....
Best Regards
Bruce
Dear Bruce,
I also think we are missing something. There seems to be little doubt that certain people are going through multiple contacts with something - both visually and through close interaction. But why are they picked. They come from all walks of life and all intelligence levels.
As far as focus. I want to share something here. A friend told about an experience he had. He had a UFO object fly right along the side of his car. His wife was in the front seat next to him. The object first far away stated and kept getting closer till it was almost right along the side of the car.
He kept shouting at his wife to look. She had her head down and did not want to look. When she said out loud. "I will not look under any and circumstance" it immediately moved away. Was this an aborted abduction? Did the abductors need her visual attention to control her? I don't know but it is an interesting thought. Remember Barney Hill - the visitor thought to him. "keep staring at me".

Hi Joesph,
That was also in my thoughts when I said "What makes this all fascinating to consider, are the predispositioning factors that must exist in terms of probability, to make an event happen in X location rather than Y or Z etc. What are the intermediary conditions? This would be a ripe area for experimentation." I agree that there is some sort of bias that is present in terms of probability, when Joe rather then Bill has this experience, as well as a saucer appearing in Phoenix rather than New York..that is one of the areas I wish there was more hard data on..there seems to be some sort of fractal relationship in this that "pulls the trigger"....between this intermediary reality of quantum behavior and the classical, reality of materiality in physics that resembkles the relationship between thought and the cerebral cortex...that is why in an earlier post, I would think some bright young scientist in physics would think this would be a fascinating area to study....what is the tipping point that opens the door through the mirror....? I have been thinking about different means to experiment with finding this lever ...so far, to no avail.
Your article, "Close Non-Local Encounters: Abductions and Dreams" is brilliant and the closest thing I've found to correlate with an "abduction" experience I had in March, 1989. Let's discuss!
What was it in the post that you cared to discuss?
Best Regards

"more possibilities, than answers..."
I have a theory that I don't think has been explored yet.
L-form, pleomorphic bacteria that interact with human DNA resulting in a change in human gene expression.
This change in gene expression causes altered human metabolism, immune response and brain chemistry.
This would also explain the symptoms of fatigue, stiffness of muscles. etc.
I believe that this situation may be intensified by the addition of hormones to the food we all eat and also sun exposure.
An analysis of human consciousness could include recent scientific discoveries on how bacteria profoundly affect thought process.
Toxoplasma gondii is particularly interesting.
Acute toxo can cause hallucinations and other psychotic behaviours. In fact, both rats and people may be tripping: studies from the 1950s and 60s suggest that toxo can trigger the production of LSD-like substances in the brain.
In the pantheon of mind-altering microbes, toxo is unique in its mission: it must alter the behaviour of its intermediate host, usually a rodent, to get itself back inside its reproductive host, a cat. In a series of experiments, Joanne Webster at the University of Oxford discovered that toxo-addled wild rats not only lost their natural fear of wandering into open spaces, but were actually attracted to cat smells.
They practically delivered themselves for dinner.
I'm going to predict that the prions associated with mad cow disease are a function of pleomorphic bacteria and altered gene expression.
I apologize if you have already covered this - I haven't read all your posts yet.
Hi, my name is Sarah. I have in the past had some out of body experiences, They happen to me but I do not incourage such things anymore when I was a child it was interesting but it sort of freeked me out when I was a young adult so I have avoided even pondering the subject since. I am a Christian in my own way, I don't know how relevant that is. Today I had another out of body experience, I have had the flu and was getting some extra rest, well trying to, I was wide awake in my bed complaing of hip pain and desperately trying to get comfortable, so I wasn't exactly in a relaxed state when I heard a noise and went down stairs to investigate, (my husband and children where still in but readying themselfs to leave while I was in bed.) In acual fact I had not gone downstairs because my body was still in bed, and there was a series of events that involved a break-in and being taken by people to a place which seemed at first to be just a room but I later decided it could be a veichle of some sort a large one. I did not know these people and there purpose was unclear. Whist I was being taken from my house by a prodomanantly female group one had said we can't take her she's not from the earth, and another said I know its not for long. There was a series of discussions between different people entering and leaving this room there was a young man who had been the first in my house who was friendly, but seemed to show a sexual interest in me Twice I had explained to him that I was in love with my husband and stayed with me until it was time to leave. There was an older lady who passed me a mobile phone which had a just a strange noise at first but when I tried to listen again a voice which felt familiar said Sarah we love you, i gave the phone back and the lady agreed it was a relative. I was taken back by a woman who literally carried me back to my body. I became concious. I was very worried that my body could have been violated whilst I was gone at first. this experience was scary but no harm had come to me buy the end. Was I taken? was I dreaming? it was so real that 12 hours later it still seems as real as eating my breakfast. this afternoon I saw the sun daily newspaper which states that there were a lot of reports of a ufo last night near my home town in Lincolnshire which had accually caused damage to a large wind turbine but no wreakage is found just a destroyed turbine, this is a long way from my current home but is where my mothers family come from and if this voice was a realative it had to be on the english side. It could be a coincidence. I don't know, I have a skeptical mind they were human looking generally good people. Is this uncommon.
Hi Sara,
Thank you for sharing your experience as it resembles my own in a general sense rather than specifics.I can most definitely affirm they are extremely disorienting and seem as real as whatever we consider real to be. That being said, I can share with you, that I can never suffered any harm nor has my own family. There is nothing to fear in this. I do suggest what you have already done, neither encourage or deny what occurred, the more you discuss this openly as well as you are able, the better you will be in processing and integrating these experiences.
Best Wishes
Bruce
Bruce, I really like your reply comment to Sara's description of her out of body experience. It's very level-headed.
Hi Bruce, Thanks for your reply, thats my usual approach. It was the idea that I myself could be not of the earth that freeked me a little because I have never had any particular interest in such subjects as UFO's although I never belived earth could be the only life planet either, it's just not something I think about with being busy with kids, life and all that. I have been convinced for many years now that my memories of being able to fly were a figment of childhood imagination, that is why the alien question bugged me, It has now put a question in my mind of the spirit life, god, and e.t life, having some fundamental link like one big picture. I have felt very happy and for once in my life not anxious about something unusual Sarah.x.
